Design Contractor – YLabs Uganda

YLabs is seeking a Ugandan design contractor for 3 months to support the Cocoon project in the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement. You will play an integral part of our team in conducting qualitative research, which includes interviewing participants, rough prototyping and data synthesis. This includes training in the human-centered design approach and working with a multidisciplinary team in the field.

This is a 3 month, full-time contract position, with a possibility to extend the contract. This position requires the ability to legally work, and regionally travel within Uganda, with remote support from YLabs’ US and Rwanda offices. Please note that this role is subject to in-country COVID-19 restrictions and regulation.


You are:

  • Able to work in a fast-paced, rapidly-changing work environment and comfortable with ambiguity

  • Motivated by designing exceptional solutions to some of the toughest challenges facing young people

  • Curious, humble, and empathetic, fascinated by others’ lives, loves, and perspectives

  • A natural collaborator who understands how to work with a diverse team

  • Experienced in conducting research on sensitive topics with marginalized populations

  • Able to easily communicate and envision concepts and ideas to team members

You have:

  • 2-4 years of experience in human-centered design (includes design research and prototyping)

  • Strong knowledge of design platforms like Adobe Creative Suite, design techniques, software, data visualization

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with colleagues, clients, and beneficiaries

  • Previous experience working on health, education or employment programs

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working on health, education or employment programs

  • Worked or lived in Sub-Saharan Africa or Asia


Additional Information

This role is a remote role, based in Uganda and involves 60% of regional travel within Uganda. All costs related to regional project travel and field work are covered. Please note that this role is subject to in-country COVID-19 restrictions and regulation.
