Position Overview
CIVICUS, a global alliance dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society around the world, is seeking a full-time Research Programme Officer to join its dynamic and mission-driven Research Cluster. This is a remote-based permanent role, subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding. The successful candidate will report directly to the Senior Research Specialist and play a pivotal role in supporting key initiatives such as the CIVICUS Lens and the State of Civil Society Report, along with other ongoing research efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Production and Dissemination : The Research Programme Officer will undertake various core research activities, including: Conducting interviews and transcription, editing recordings, and facilitating consultation processes. Performing literature reviews and collecting/validating secondary data. Producing analytical written content, contributing to reports, briefs, and blog posts. Maintaining thorough documentation and research notes. Assisting in designing research methodologies and protocols. Updating the CIVICUS Lens digital platform with new content. Developing social media kits to support the dissemination of research outputs
- Workflow and Intern Coordination : The role requires strong administrative and team support skills, including: Organising workflows and monitoring deliverables across multiple research streams. Maintaining databases and supporting internal compliance and documentation needs. Assisting in recruiting, onboarding, and coordinating research interns. Assigning tasks, providing regular feedback, and supporting interns’ professional development
- Cross-Team Collaboration : This position is central to the communication between the Research team and other CIVICUS departments: Coordinating with the Communications team on dissemination and public engagement strategies. Liaising with graphic designers for formatting and visual aspects of publications. Working with translation and editorial teams for multilingual research outputs. Ensuring inclusivity standards are upheld in collaboration with the Diversity & Inclusion team.Supporting coordination with external consultants and contractors.
- Engagement with External Stakeholders : The Research Programme Officer will serve as a bridge between CIVICUS and the wider civil society research community by: Maintaining consistent communication with partner organisations and collaborators. Coordinating with academics, civil society leaders, and external researchers on shared projects. Organising external-facing events such as webinars and consultations. Managing stakeholder databases and communications.
- Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) : The role also includes contributions to knowledge sharing and impact assessment: Supporting preparation of donor reports, both financial and narrative. Helping facilitate learning sessions and alliance-building initiatives within CIVICUS networks.
- Other Organisational Responsibilities : As part of the broader CIVICUS team, the Research Programme Officer is expected to: Reflect CIVICUS values in professional relationships. Represent CIVICUS in external forums, as required. Contribute to internal strategic planning and participate in cross-departmental working groups. Perform other research-related duties as needed.
Candidate Profile
Education & Language Skills
- A Master’s degree in social sciences, international relations, political science, or a closely related field is essential.
- Fluency in English is required; Spanish fluency is highly preferred, ideally at a native level.
Core Experience & Competencies

- At least 5 years of research experience, with a minimum of 2 years in a coordination or supervisory role.
- Demonstrated experience in managing research projects, conducting interviews, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead or mentor small teams, especially interns or junior researchers.
- Proficiency in project management and database systems.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented environment.
- Strong attention to detail and capacity for high-quality content creation.
Desirable Attributes
- Advanced expertise in civil society and human rights research.
- Additional language skills beyond English and Spanish.
- Familiarity with translation, editing, publishing, or content management systems.
- Experience with digital tools and platforms for research, data collection, and publishing.
- Prior work with international civil society organisations or institutions is an added advantage.
