United Nations Volunteer program ( August 2025) : Apply Now to Become a UN Volunteer

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program is dedicated to fostering peace and development worldwide through volunteerism. Volunteerism plays a crucial role in tackling global challenges, building trust, and empowering people to get involved. UNV’s mission is to promote volunteerism, integrate it into development initiatives, and mobilize a diverse pool of volunteers globally.

If you’re interested in becoming an international UN Volunteer in 2025, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you understand and pursue these opportunities.

Understanding UN Volunteer Opportunities

UNV offers a variety of ways to contribute, including on-site and online roles.

  • International UN Volunteers: You’ll serve in a country other than your own. As of January 1, 2025, these assignments typically last from 3 to 48 months.
  • National UN Volunteers: You’ll serve within your home country. These roles make up around 70% of all UNV assignments.
  • Online Volunteers: You can contribute to projects remotely from anywhere in the world. These roles are usually up to 12 weeks and require about 20 hours per week. Online volunteers do not receive financial compensation.

To find current UNV assignments, visit the UNV Unified Volunteering Platform (UVP) at app.unv.org

Eligibility for International UN Volunteers

While requirements vary by assignment, here are the general eligibility criteria for international UN Volunteers:

  • Age: As of July 1, 2024, there are no age restrictions. Anyone between 18 and 80 years old can apply.
  • Education: Most assignments require a higher technical diploma, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree.
  • Professional Experience:
    • UN Youth Volunteers & University Volunteers: 0-3 years of experience.
    • UN Volunteer Specialists: 3-15 years of experience.
    • UN Expert Volunteers: More than 15 years of experience.
  • Language Proficiency: A strong command of one of UNV’s three working languages—English, French, or Spanish—is required.
  • Personal Qualities: You should be committed to the values of volunteerism, respect diversity, possess strong interpersonal skills, and be adaptable to challenging conditions. Previous experience volunteering or working in a developing country is often a plus.

The Application Process

Follow these steps to apply for a UNV role:

  1. Register in the UNV Global Talent Pool: This is the most critical first step. Go to the UN Volunteers Unified Volunteering Platform (UVP) at app.unv.org and create a detailed profile. Be sure to include your personal information, skills, education, and experience. This process can take around 45 minutes.
  2. Browse and Apply for Assignments: Once registered, you can explore available assignments on the UVP that match your skills and interests. Some positions are filled directly from the Global Talent Pool without being publicly advertised, so having a complete profile is essential.
  3. Review and Selection: The UNV team will review profiles to match candidates with open positions. If you are a good match, a host agency will contact you for an interview.
  4. Interviews: Interviews are typically conducted by senior managers and may include competency-based questions or skills tests.
  5. Final Steps: Successful candidates will receive a contract and prepare for their assignment.

Important Things to Consider

  • Competition is High: The selection process is competitive. Candidates with relevant skills, experience, and a strong dedication to the UN’s mission have a better chance of being selected.
  • Conditions of Service: International UN Volunteers receive allowances to support their assignment. These are not a salary but include a monthly living allowance, medical insurance, annual leave, and a resettlement allowance at the end of the assignment. Travel costs and a setting-in grant may also be provided.
  • No Application Fees: The application process is completely free. Be cautious of scams and never pay a fee to apply for a UNV position.

To get started, visit the official UN Volunteers website at www.unv.org and navigate to the “Become a volunteer” section. Good luck with your application!
