Key Requirements for VWP Travel in 2025
- Electronic Passport: All travelers must possess a machine-readable electronic passport (e-passport) with a digital chip.
- ESTA Approval: You must obtain an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before your trip. This can be done online through the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website. It’s recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your departure. An approved ESTA is generally valid for two years.
- Purpose of Travel: Your travel must be for tourism, business, or transit purposes. The VWP does not permit travel for work or study.
- Previous Travel: Certain restrictions apply if you have traveled to specific countries, such as Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, or Cuba, after March 1, 2011, and January 12, 2021, respectively.
- Duration of Stay: The maximum stay is 90 days. Overstaying is a serious violation that can affect future travel to the U.S.
