Research Manager at GSL
About the Role
This role is a key part of the Content and Knowledge team at GSL. The field of school leadership in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is gaining visibility, with governments and funders starting to invest more resources. However, there’s a lack of empirical evidence on how school leaders impact student outcomes and how education systems can effectively support them. The Research Manager will help address this gap by producing original research and synthesizing existing knowledge on school leadership to inform policy and program decisions.

- Developing research studies and proposals with a focus on monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning (MERL).
- Conducting a variety of research, including global surveys, qualitative studies, A/B testing, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), process monitoring, and program evaluations.
- Collaborating with partners to collect, manage, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data.
- Contributing to publications and helping to communicate research insights to a wider audience.
- Helping shape the future of GSL’s research as the organization grows.
Candidate Qualifications
Required Qualifications

- Master’s degree in Economics, Public Policy, Education Policy, or a related field with a strong quantitative focus.
- Minimum of 3 years of work experience in education or social development research.
- Experience with literature reviews, creating questionnaires, and implementing surveys.
- Proficiency in quantitative research and analysis, including at least one data analysis software (e.g., STATA, R).
- Fluency in English.
Preferred Qualifications

- Experience managing surveys and data collection, including student learning assessments.
- Experience cleaning, analyzing, and presenting data to diverse stakeholders.
- Experience conducting and analyzing qualitative research.
- Experience synthesizing research findings into policy briefs or blogs.
- Experience collaborating with a diverse group of partners and researchers.
Life as a Research Manager at GSL
Day-to-Day
- Team meetings are typically held between 11 am and 2 pm UTC, with other meetings scheduled before or after.
- This is a remote role requiring you to manage your own time and priorities. The work week is approximately 40 hours, but some weeks may be heavier than others.
- This role requires 20-25% travel.

You’ll report to Gautam Anand, the Director of Research. He believes in a collaborative approach and encourages independence and ownership of projects while providing technical guidance and support. He values open communication and honest feedback.

Challenges
- This is not a traditional 9-5 job. You may have calls very early in the morning or late at night due to multiple time zones.
- Working remotely across many time zones can be isolating.
- The work is fast-paced and requires you to juggle many projects at once.

- Synthesize existing research to inform programmatic and policy work.
- Identify opportunities for research funding and develop proposals.
Location and Pay
This is a remote position, with a preference for candidates based in Africa and Southeast Asia. You must have work authorization in your country of residence as GSL cannot sponsor visas.
Salary is competitive with the non-profit education sector and is commensurate with your skills and experience. The salary will be determined based on your country of residence. For example, annual salary ranges could be:
- Malaysia: MYR 82,059 – 117,227
- Kenya: KES 2,458,040 – 3,511,486
- Philippines: ₱834,258 – 1,191,798
More senior candidates may be considered for a Senior Manager role with a higher salary.
