VOLUNTEER ROLES : Apply for the UNESCO World Heritage Center Volunteer Campaigns 2025

Are you passionate about preserving our planet’s invaluable cultural and natural treasures? Do you dream of contributing to a global movement that fosters resilience, humanity, and innovation? The UNESCO World Heritage Centre invites you to be part of the World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) 2025 Campaign, under the inspiring theme of ‘World Heritage Volunteers 2025 – Working on the Future’!

This year marks another exciting chapter in the WHV Initiative, launched in 2008 to empower young people to take concrete action in the protection, preservation, and promotion of World Heritage. With 89 action camp projects scheduled from April to December 2025 across 82 World Heritage properties and Tentative List sites, and implemented by 70 organizations in 41 countries, the opportunities for impactful volunteering are vast and diverse.

What is the WHV Initiative All About?

The WHV Initiative is more than just a volunteer program; it’s a dynamic platform for youth engagement and international cooperation. It brings together national and international volunteers to work alongside local communities and site managers. Through a combination of hands-on activities and awareness-raising efforts, volunteers contribute directly to the conservation of our shared heritage. These projects are designed to provide empowering and enriching experiences, allowing young people to transcend geographical boundaries and connect with some of the most extraordinary places on Earth.

Imagine yourself restoring historic structures, participating in environmental clean-ups, engaging in community outreach, or documenting intangible heritage – all while immersing yourself in diverse cultures and building lasting connections. The WHV Initiative is a testament to the power of collective action, demonstrating how young people, communities, and heritage professionals can collaborate to ensure World Heritage remains a source of resilience and inspiration for future generations. The initiative is proudly led by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in collaboration with Better World.

Your Path to Becoming a World Heritage Volunteer

Unlike traditional volunteer programs, you do not apply directly to UNESCO or Better World for individual volunteer positions. Instead, you apply to the specific organizations that have been selected to implement the WHV 2025 projects.

Here’s how you can join this incredible journey:

  1. Access the Official Project List: The first crucial step is to obtain the comprehensive list of selected projects for the World Heritage Volunteers 2025 Campaign. This list, available on the official UNESCO World Heritage Centre website, provides brief descriptions of each project, including its activities, duration, and timeline. You can find this list on the dedicated WHV 2025 page: https://whc.unesco.org/en/volunteers2025/. Look for the link to the “Full list of selected projects for the World Heritage Volunteers 2025 Campaign.”
  2. Choose Your Project: Browse through the diverse array of projects. Consider factors like the type of conservation work, the location, the dates, and the specific skills or interests that align with your own. Whether it’s archaeological conservation in Europe, wildlife monitoring in an African national park, or cultural preservation in an Asian city, there’s a unique experience waiting for you.
  3. Contact the Implementing Organization Directly: Once you’ve identified a project that sparks your interest, the next step is to contact the organization responsible for its implementation. The contact details for each organization are provided within the brief descriptions on the UNESCO list. They will provide you with all the necessary information regarding their specific application procedure, eligibility criteria, and any other relevant details, such as participation fees (which some organizations may charge to cover accommodation, meals, and local transport).

General eligibility requirements often include:

  • Being at least 18 years old.
  • Availability for the entire project duration (typically a minimum of 10 days).
  • A genuine interest in cultural and natural heritage preservation.
  • Good physical health for hands-on activities.
  • Proficiency in English or the local language, depending on the project.

Volunteering for World Heritage preservation is truly a unique and transformative experience. Don’t miss your chance to contribute to the future of our shared heritage. Explore the projects, find your passion, and join the WHV 2025 Campaign today!
