The Opportunity
LAW is recruiting a dynamic and experienced Programme Manager to lead its Sudan programme, based in Nairobi. This role plays a pivotal part in delivering high-impact legal and advocacy work for survivors of human rights abuses in Sudan and neighbouring countries, including Kenya, Chad, and Uganda.
The successful candidate will drive strategic litigation efforts, oversee partnerships, manage legal aid initiatives, and champion survivor-centred approaches to transitional justice and gender equality. This is a leadership role for a legal professional who thrives in challenging environments and has a strong background in project and team management.
Key Responsibilities
Programme Development and Management
- Lead the expansion and strategic direction of LAW’s Sudan programme.
- Recruit, manage, and mentor a diverse team of staff and consultants.
- Foster a high-performance, inclusive work culture that promotes innovation and learning.Design and implement projects involving litigation, advocacy, capacity-building, and survivor support.
- Oversee project delivery in accordance with proposals, budgets, and donor regulations.
- Ensure compliance with LAW’s policies, MEAL standards, and safeguarding protocols.
- Maintain strong relationships with justice actors, governments, donors, and civil society.
- Manage programme risks and coordinate with LAW’s senior leadership.
Legal and Advocacy Work
- Develop and lead legal strategies addressing international crimes and gender-based violence.
- Support case-building and litigation efforts at national and international levels.
- Collaborate with lawyers and local partners to strengthen legal capacity.
- Design advocacy initiatives based on evidence gathered from casework.
- Organise legal trainings, roundtables, and stakeholder events.
Fundraising and Reporting
- Develop a fundraising strategy to secure future programme sustainability.
- Lead donor engagement, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality narrative and financial reports.
- Draft concept notes, proposals, and donor communications.
Team Leadership and Management
- Manage partnerships and build the capacity of implementing partners.
Candidate Profile
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s degree in law, human rights, or related field.
- Qualified lawyer with at least five years’ experience in international human rights, humanitarian law, refugee law, or criminal law.
- Proven track record of legal aid service delivery, particularly for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
- Extensive experience in project management, including planning, M&E, and budget oversight.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams across multiple locations.
- Fluency in English (oral and written); Arabic is a strong asset.
- Experience working with displaced populations in complex or humanitarian settings.
- Legal right to work in Kenya is preferred.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% across Sudan, Chad, and Uganda.
