Position Title: Biomedical Engineer

Reports to: Supply Chain Manager

Location: Kampala

Position summary: The incumbent’s main role is to oversee all new installations, performance and maintenance of all MUWRP laboratory equipment and electrical systems for the smooth running of all laboratory related activities of the organisation. He/she will be responsible for all Biomedical engineering activities of the organisation that relates to the procurement function in the administration department of MUWRP.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Biomedical Engineer will be responsible for all biomedical engineering activities that include all Equipment installations, performance, preventative maintenance, functionality of all MUWRP backup power systems and reporting among others, and these are further mentioned below;

Basic Function of the Position

A. Perform installation, preventive maintenance and repair work on electrical systems and an extensive range of large and small electromechanical equipment at various MUWRP held Facilities
B. Oversee back-up power (i.e. generators, invertors, UPS) connections and preventive maintenance to assure functionality.
C. Oversee Liquid Nitrogen plants and ensure adequate maintenance and condition of plants

 

1. General Laboratory Equipment

a. Perform duties involving the installation, renovation, preventive maintenance, repair and rebuild of laboratory equipment, machines, components and control devices associated to the electrical systems, lighting system, electrical controls and components of electrical equipment and machinery, and electrical parts and devices of electrically operated appliances.
b. Directly over see the management of MUWRP Liquid Nitrogen plants at the laboratory and coordinate all service needs and resolving unique problems with the manufacturer.
c. Participate in major troubleshooting, installation and renovation of facilities, utilities and equipment.
d. Directs biomedical equipment operation by providing equipment operation demonstrations where deemed necessary, instructing staff in the day today use and care of equipment.
e. Maintains supplies inventory for the Liquid Nitrogen plant by checking stock, anticipating needs, placing orders, and verifying receipt for supplies in this category.
f. Maintain and keep assigned tools and equipment in good order.  Personally, perform tool inventory to make sure all assigned tools and equipment are accounted for at all times.
g. Prepares biomedical reports regarding equipment performance in the various laboratories by collecting, analysing, and summarizing information to inform decision making.
h. Complete preventive maintenance schedules and share with the different departments for easy coordination and planning.
i. Evaluates service contracts and maintains all Laboratory/ power system equipment inventories/Fixed Assets.
j. Maintains a safe working environment by conducting safety tests, recommending and complying with procedures, training and guiding personnel and complying with standards.
k. Respond to temperature/power outages outages as necessary in liaison with the IT section of MUWRP.

 

2. Electrical Systems

a. Designing, implementing, maintaining and improving electrical systems that support all MUWRP sites
b. Ensuring that installations and operations of all electrical systems conform to standards and electrical system specifications
c. Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials in liaison with contractors where applicable to inform decision making
d. Clean, service and repair electrical controls and components of electrical equipment and machinery.
e. Troubleshooting and repairing malfunctioning equipment, appliances.
f. Writing reports regarding existing MUWRP electrical system that support MUWRP facilities to inform decision making

 

3. Logistics Support

1. Prepare requisitions for common and special tools, equipment, spare parts, bench stock, and other materials needed for immediate or future needs to the Supervisor.
2. Ensure unscheduled work orders are completed correctly, and task closure reports submitted.
3. Identify electromechanical equipment needing maintenance documentation such as owner’s manuals from the manufacturer.
4. Must be prepared to work and be available on nights and weekends. May be called to respond to emergency and unforeseen work.
5. Work closely with all equipment contractors where applicable.

 

4. Others

a. Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Logistics Manager
b. Observe zero-tolerance to corruption and ensure that any incidences are reported and investigated in line with the MUWRP’s Code of Conduct

Required qualifications, skills and Experience:

1. Diploma in Biomedical engineering or electrical engineering and 4 years’ experience as a fully qualified electrician or biomedical engineer with experience in refrigeration and air conditioning.
2. Highly motivated, results-oriented, and with well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
4. Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work with limited supervision
5. Ability to operate various hand tools, and instruments is required.
6. Strong computer skills with experience working in a medical research institution
7. Available Guidelines – Laboratory standard operating procedures; written and verbal instructions from supervisor and other office management personnel; equipment operating manuals
8. Authority to Make Commitments – Incumbent has no authority to make commitments. Incumbent is responsible for reporting all requests for commitments to the supervisor

 

PHYSICAL ABILITY: Ability to professionally communicate in writing and verbally or other means deemed appropriate. The ability to frequently travel between MUWRP head offices in Kampala and the various cohort recruitment sites, some of which are located in rural districts like Kayunga, Mukono, Buvuma and Fort portal.
