About Women’s International Peace Centre

Women’s International Peace Centre, formerly Isis-WICCE, is a feminist organization founded in 1974 and based in Kampala, Uganda. Our mission is to ignite women’s leadership, amplify their voices and deepen their impact in recreating peace. Our WEAVE model intersects research (on women’s specific experiences and needs), evidence-based advocacy (to influence national, regional and international policy and practice), holistic healing (to enable women’s wellbeing and participation in peace processes), skills and movement building (to equip WHRDs with necessary skills, build networks and facilitate exchange of strategies to advance women’s leadership for peace.

The Peace Centre works in Africa, Asia, at regional and global level with women war survivors, women human rights defenders, and women’s rights organizations to amplify women’s voices and advocate for policies and programmes tackling the impact of conflict on women and communities using our WEAVE model. The Peace Centre’s current strategic plan (2019-2022) focuses on amplifying the voices and agency of women and women’s rights organisations to build and sustain inclusive peace and security in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nepal, South Sudan and Uganda

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Executive Director, the Communications Consultant will work in the Communications and Advocacy Section to design communications strategies, develop plans, products and initiatives that align with the Peace Centre’s strategic plan, branding and key messaging priorities using a full range of communications channels including digital publishing and social media. They will work with programme staff and partners in Burundi, DRC, South Sudan, Nepal, Uganda, at regional and global levels.

The Communications Consultant will

  • Lead the development and implementation of communication and outreach strategies and plans for Burundi, DRC and South Sudan in liaison with communications staff, country-based coordinators and partners.
  • Conceptualise and create content for digital publishing, website and social media including designing and implementing campaigns linked to the Peace Centre’s priorities
  • Develop and produce communications materials in French and English including newsletter, fact sheets, brochures, press releases, and articles, and ensure wide and effective dissemination through diverse channels.
  • Write, copyedit and proofread knowledge products, including reports, technical papers, briefs, think pieces, web stories, blogs and press releases.
  • Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learned from country goals and activities and ensure exchange of information.
  • Lead in cultivating relationships with press in countries and at regional level including responding to media inquiries, facilitating media interviews and connecting Peace Centre staff and partners to the media.
  • Identify and explore new communication partnerships and manage existing partnerships to boost visibility and connections with other partners while ensuring that key information reaches the public and other targeted audiences.
  • Support the planning and execution of virtual meetings, as well as the management of a French and English-speaking online community.
  • Perform any other duty assigned from time to time

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field. Postgraduate qualification in Communications, Peace and Conflict Studies, Gender, Development Studies, Political Science, Social Sciences will be an added advantage.
  • Five years of progressively responsible work experience in communications at national or regional/international level.
  • Demonstrated experience with website management, digital publishing and social media.
  • Knowledge of the Women, Peace and Security agenda.
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team player in a multi-disciplinary team with minimum supervision.
