The consultant will directly contribute to the Work Package “Developing, testing and evaluating of best-bet options for pig manure management in Ugandan smallholder farming systems” in the Livestock CRP Priority Country project in Central Uganda, as well as to Work Package A1 “Setting up GHG emissions baselines and performance indicators for adaptation interventions” of the PCSL project. Both work packages aim particularly at generating accurate Tier 2 GHG emissions baselines for livestock systems, which are necessary to develop mitigation options for livestock production while also enhancing the productivity and sustainability of smallholder livestock systems. The consultant will contribute to this by undertaking the following research activities:· Conduct a household survey about ruminant manure management systems;· Adapt the same household survey to pigs and include animal- and human-health related aspects;· Collate and analyze the collected data and organize them in a survey database;· Calculate CH4 and N2O emission factors from local manure management practices in SW and Central Uganda based on the survey data;· Identify “climate-smart” manure management options by identifying challenges and possible strategies for sustainable improvement of manure management;· Write a report with recommendations on improved & climate-smart manure management for smallholder pig farms and semi-extensive ruminant farms.
