Role Purpose
The British Council seeks Local Materials Developers Language Consultants. This is following on from the pilot, Language for Resilience Uganda focuses on how language can help integrate refugees in host communities and support them in succeeding in the new education system. British Council Uganda seeks local consultants to work with an international consultant and technical advisor to support with materials development for preparing teachers to use systematic language supportive strategies so as to include the many students speaking different home languages; having teachers receive support in dealing with refugee students who have experienced trauma, and head teachers receive parallel training to ensure that they can give maximum support to their staff and setting up after school clubs, providing support in English language for children that need to catch up and support from the parents who encourage children to participate in the club activities
Main accountabilities:
The local material developers will be working together on the following:
- Ensure that all project materials are derived from and linked to the curriculum and course books that the teachers involved in the project are working from.
- Ensure that all project materials are contextually appropriate.
- Advise on the development of the new Language Support Systems (LSS) course with revisions to existing handbook and a new module comprising of a 10-day training course for teachers, a 6-day MT training course and a developmental observation tool with rubric and guidance for the observer.
- Co-train 30 Master Trainers to deliver training on Handbook, LSS, TAGs and developmental observations (6 days).
- Advise on and support with developing after school Remedial English Club resources covering all primary school grades with simple activities guides for teachers (30x half-hour sessions).
- Advise on and support with creating an English subject placement test for primary grades.
- Advise on and support with developing materials for a three-hour orientation workshop on Remedial English Clubs for PTA and community leaders.
- Advise on and support with creating a teacher activity group (TAG) model with resources for 10 meetings based on existing British Council materials.
- Work in a team with 1 international materials developer and a technical advisor.
Qualification /Experience Requirements:
The ideal candidate should have:
- B2-level English in Writing and Speaking
- Bachelor’s degree – desirable in English Literature or English Language
- Diploma in English Teaching is desirable.
- Previous experience in materials writing is essential.

- Overall professional qualifications and experience relevant to the consultancy.
- Track record relevant to the consultancy.
- Approach to carrying out this consultancy.
Other Information
Location – Uganda
Duration – 20 days over a period of 36 months
Consultancy fees – 820,000 UGX per day (8hours)
