Job Purpose

Responsible for all functions associated with the efficient design, implementation and maintenance (performance, integrity and security) of Relational database management systems

This role reports to the IT Infrastructure Manager in Production Services area.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Accountable for Production Services in GTO. This encompasses All Relational database management systems in this area (Oracle, SQL Server and DB2 databases):

  • Performs ongoing tuning of the database instances and Monitoring system health as well as optimize performance
  • Performs the capacity planning required to maintain the databases full operational
  • Maintain operational documentation including data standards, policies, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary
  • Ensuring that database backups and archiving happens as well as maintaining and testing disaster recovery procedures and non-production environment refresh
  • Perform Database installations, upgrades and patch deployments as well as Control changes to reference data through the development life cycle and Carry out impact analysis of any changes made to the databases
  • Performs data modelling, normalization and RDBMS vendor interface management and ensuring compliance with RDBMS software license agreement
  • Identify and manage RDBMS related incidents and escalate tickets with RDBMS vendor technical support teams when required
  • Implement and enforce database security through logical access control and database activity auditing
  • Provide periodic management and incident reports as required
  • Managing Creation and Administration of primary database objects, maintain primary database storage structures, maintain site data replication and perform proper RDBMS application initialisation and shutdown practices
  • Aide in the administration of the supporting platforms and applications (operating systems and backup solutions)
  • Maintain a detailed and updated runbook for all RDMS environments
  • Improve system stability
  • Participate in disaster recovery functions and processes
  • Ensure that issues logged on issue tracker are closed within SLA
  • Implement Changes with minimum Business disruption
  • Ensure DR capability is fit for purpose Design principles
  • Improve s Service through targeted Improvement Programs
  • Standardise and Optimise service offerings across all business units
  • Ensure change request implementation and attending to IRs raised.

Preferred Qualification and Experience

  • Degree in a computer related field.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in Oracle databases
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in AIX Unix and Linux
  • Extensive general technical knowledge of information technology infrastructure.
  • Advanced proficiency in TSM backup solution
  • Ability to interpret complex data into meaningful information
  • General system administration skills
  • Programming skills is an added advantage
  • Good communication skills
