JOB SUMMARY:

 

Water For People is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that works with people and partners to develop innovative and long-lasting solutions to the water, sanitation, and hygiene problems in developing countries.  The organization strives to continually improve, experiment with promising new ideas, and leverage resources to multiply its impact.

Water For People has secured funds from the UNOPS through the Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF) to finance the project- Accelerating Access to improved Sanitation and hygiene Services using Market Based Sanitation Approach in Uganda from 2023 to 2025 .

It is against this background that Water for People in Uganda is hiring a Grant Coordinator for the project with the following qualification and competencies:

Position objective: 

The Grant Coordinator – reports to the Country Director. S/he will be responsible for managing all technical aspects of the Grant, including taking lead in sub grantee/ partnership management, Grant work planning and execution, managing Grant operating and budget plans, monitoring of Grant implementation activities working with the monitoring and Evaluation officer, Grant communication and reporting.

The Grant Coordinator will provide necessary support to grant program staff under his/her supervision as well as local government partners to ensure that grant objectives are achieved in due time.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  1. Participation in Grant Strategic and operational planning
  • Work with Grant Program staff and Sub grantees to develop work plans and budget in line with grant strategy and objectives
  • Contribute to the  grant  program and policy discussions together with the grant’s steering committee and  the respective line ministries
  • Contribute to sector review and/or thematic research in line with Market Based sanitation and Hygiene

 

      2. Partnerships

  • Manage the subgrantee of the grant to ensure efficient delivery of grant outputs and outcomes.
  • Strengthen relationships with subgrantees, the local private sector and CBOs supporting the grant.
  • Contribute to identifying capacity building needs of local partners and propose options of supporting them.
  • Work with the team to identify partners/consultants who can contribute to effective and efficient delivery of the project.
  • Ensure that partners/ subgrantee rojects are visited regularly and that they are provided with the technical and managerial advice and training that enables them to implement projects.

     3. Supervisory duties

  • Oversee the management of the grant accountant, monitoring and Evaluation officer and project officers.
  • Review and approve programme/ activity concepts/ requests and retirements in line with water for  people’s policies.

     4. Advocacy and learning

  • In co-operation with partners and staff, develop program work that contributes to the grant’s learning goals and agenda.
  • Contribute to organizational learning by preparing and disseminating data, lessons learned, good practices to partners and other stakeholders, and organize periodic organizational learning events to share best practices.

     5. Monitoring and Evaluation

  1. Work with the regional and country monitoring officers to develop a system for monitoring implementation of the grant, Input – Output – Outcome.
  2. Track delivery against Water For People—U goals and objectives, including establishing baselines to gauge and support the performance of the grant.
  3. Conduct and/or supervise periodic evaluations of the Program and Thematic Strategies and their contribution to the achievement of overall results
  4.  Reporting 
  5. Update and maintain the grant reporting calendar.
  6. Prepare concise monthly, bi-annual reports and produce a synthetic and analytical progress report to guide management decision-making.
  7. Maintain grant reporting schedules, work with program teams to draft narrative and financial reports prior to donor deadlines, review reports for consistency with project objectives and timelines, as well as for adherence to donor requirements.
  8. Communication   
  • Increasing the grant’s visibility through strategic communications while working with the HQ team
  • Developing articles, storylines and pictures and contribute to grant communication package.
  • Encourage grant staff to write technical papers for presentation at national, regional and international for a.
  • Produce articles that can be submitted to the local medial like national newspapers to commemorate important WASH days and increase stakeholder participation.
  • Contribute to the development of printed communication materials, including editing images/photos and layout.
  • Design brief communication products like fact sheets, brochures to communicate and promote key aspects of grant activities.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Strategic thinker with well-developed planning skills
  • At least Five (5) years in  a similar position
  • Understanding of community level water and sanitation development, with at least
  • five (5) years’ experience.
  • Understanding in Market Based Sanitation in development
  • Experience in Tracking Budget Expenses and Grants Management
  • Experience in Staff Supervision and Performance Management
  • At least five (5) years’ experience in project and personnel management.
  • Experience in budget development and operations management.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills
  • Strong problem solving skills.

•   Self-starter and ability to undertake any tasks without intensive supervision.

•   Maintain sound ethical principles, integrity and transparency of due process.

•   Common sense to make judgments about a situation requiring deviations from

routine tasks.

•  Fluent in English

Education & Formal training

  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Development Studies, Social Sector Planning and Management, International Development,or any related fields. Masters in Business Administration will be an added advantage

Physical requirements/working conditions

  • This position will be based in Kampala, with regular travel to program sites in Uganda
  • Ability to travel to project sites and meet with partners, as necessary
