The Laboratory Technician for Nakasero Hospital Laboratory under moderate supervision performs routine testing and maintains appropriate documentation in relation to the same.
Key Result areas
• Assists in laboratory analyses by obtaining, inventorying, storing, and preparing reagents, samples, and solutions for analysis.
• Maintains open account records, writes monthly and quarterly open account reports, and places regular and emergency supply orders.
• Cleans, maintains, calibrates, and documents actions on laboratory apparatus, equipment, glassware, instruments, and safety devices on a regular basis; notifies supervisor or other appropriate personnel when repair or service is necessary.
• Maintains, updates, and documents reference, standards, and protocol files for easy retrieval by the laboratory administrator.
• Collects, packages, stores, and arranges for removal of hazardous chemical and/or reagent wastes and hazardous biological wastes.
• Performance of tests on patient specimens at the lab, in a timely manner.
• Managing clinical and laboratory aspects of the lab and ensuring collection, recording and reporting of clean, quality, data.
• Acquiring expertise in approved newer diagnostics tests such as LPA, LC and RS;
• Implementing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the laboratory, including SOPs for specific aspects of LPA, LC and RS and specifications for equipment, infection control, etc, to ensure Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
• Providing support to the Lab-in-Charge for all laboratory operations including regular MIS functioning, maintenance of all lab equipment, logistics of various lab consumables, etc.
• Conducting day to day lab activities connected with the newer diagnostics and ensuring quality control
• Assisting the lab in-charge in providing monthly / quarterly and annual reports in the prescribed formats;
• Urgently reporting all adverse events in laboratory functioning to the Lab in-Charge
• Liaising and facilitating the Technical Team on all technical matters relating to laboratory functioning, in consultation with the Lab-in-Charge;
• Undertaking any other job assigned by the supervisor.
Knowledge/Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
• Diploma/ Bachelor Degree in Medical Laboratory Science with a specialization in Microbiology/ Biotechnology or higher qualification.
• Three years or more of work experience in a busy laboratory
• Good oral and written communication skills;
• Strong team orientation;
• Ability to work independently, with minimum handholding and supervision;
• Energetic, resilient and passionate;
• Professional, mature and confident.
