Overall Assignment Objective.

The job holder is responsible for providing temporary cover (about three days a week) by supervising the operations of the pharmacy, establishing, formulating, implementing and reviewing procedures relating to pharmaceuticals and medical consumables. The position holder monitors and supervises on the rational use of medicines.

 

He/she supervises the safe storage of pharmaceuticals in pharmacy, stores and in other departments, ensuring availability at all times of quality, safe, efficacious and cost-effective medicines and health supplies in the hospital. She is expected to work closely with the Medical and Rehabilitation teams providing guidance on adherence to professional and national pharmaceutical guidelines.

 

Key result areas:

  • Administrative and technical Services of the Pharmacy Department ensured; properly administered dispensing work by Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Direct supervision of all stores with medicines and consumables, proper storage including theatre store.
  • Established procedures and systems related to pharmaceuticals maintained, formulary checked, implemented and reviewed.
  • Procurement of medicines and disposal pharmaceutical waste; inventory management, medicines monitoring, research and licensing ensured.
  • Pharmacy operations regularly reviewed for compliance with policies, laws and regulations and controlling the pharmacy’s budget.
  • Keen monitoring and controlling of Antibiotics, Narcotics and precursor drugs according to the relevant legislation ensured.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends and practices in pharmaceutical care.
  • Preparation of medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders ensured.
  • Patient counseling on how and when to take a prescribed medicine; information about potential side effect that they may experience from taking the medicine provided as necessary.
  • The preparation of extemporaneous procedures supervised and the hospital formulary list updated.
  • Reports written on pharmacy operational matters, medication usage and budgetary matters, and submitted to the Medical Director (ever two weeks and monthly) as required.
  • The department staff proficiency to complete their tasks monitored and ensured.
  • Pharmacy team Continuous Medical Education (CME) attended to and coordinated within other hospital CMEs.
  • Ward rounds attended to and advice given to Clinicians.

 

Academic & Professional qualifications

University degree in Pharmacy, registration by the pharmacy board at the Ministry of Health and an active member of the pharmaceutical society of Uganda is essential. Good computer knowledge and skills, knowledge in excel application are desirable.

Work experience & skills

At least three years’ experience as a Pharmacist with at least one year in a hospital setting. Knowledge in medicines supply chain management, licensing, working in the NGO/Not-for-Profit hospital an advantage including understanding of import and export procedures of National Drug Authority

 

Excellent communication, presentation and pharmaceutical care skills as well as

knowledge of local languages is desirable.
