JOB TITLE: SENIOR LEGAL OFFICER

Department: Legal

Reports to: Manager Legal

Supervises: Legal Officer

Work station: SWICO Head Office Kampala

JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Legal Officer will be responsible for handling litigation cases, either when the
Company is sued or the Company is seeking legal redress; and for carrying out the day to day legal duties that require the experience and expertise of a legal officer at senior level.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Planning and organizing for the provision of legal and company secretarial services

(i) Participate in the formulation of work plans, budgets and strategies for the provision of
legal services

(ii) Determine periodic performance targets for him/herself, and agree on them with the
Manager Legal

2. Providing legal services

(i) Draft pleadings, correspondences, prepare reports and proof read documents assigned
by the Legal Manager.

(ii) Review pleadings, correspondences and reports prepared by the Legal Officer.

(iii) Draft agreements, contracts and other legal documents as assigned.

(iv) Review agreements, contracts and other legal documents prepared by the Legal Officer.

(v) Participate in policy development and review, ensuring proper use of legal terminology, spelling, business English and grammar and ensuring compliance with applicable codes, legal and statutory requirements.

(vi) Prepare plaints, court documents, and other related documents.

(vii) Participate in handling litigation matters and where necessary liaise with external
lawyers

(viii) Carry out legal research and review progress of ongoing cases.

(ix) Participate in handling matters of subrogation in liaison with claims staff and other stake holders, and give the financial implications.

(x) Monitor changes in the relevant legislation and regulatory environment and give timely information to SWICO management team on the same.

(xi) Conduct claims investigations and advise the Claims Department accordingly.

(xii) Provide legal opinion/ counsel when requested.

3. Ensuring Legal and Statutory Compliance

(i) Continuously monitor compliance with statutory obligations and advise management
accordingly.

(ii) Contribute to the provision of documentation and information for compliance purposes.

4. Contributing to Institutional Development

(i) Provide technical guidance and support to the Legal Officer as necessary.

(ii) Periodically assess own capacity development needs and propose appropriate programs to address the identified needs.

(iii) Participate in the coaching and on-the-job training of new staff in the Legal Department.

(iv) Attend and actively participate in periodic meetings of the Legal Department, and take actions arising from the meetings, as assigned.

(v) Contribute to the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports for departmental meetings and management meetings.

(vi) Take minutes at meetings whenever delegated by the Manager Legal.

(vii) Take charge of the preparation and registration of legal documents like tenancy agreements, statutory declarations, affidavits, memorandum of understandings among others.

(viii) Represent the Company in legal matters as assigned.

Job Specifications and skills

 A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Law with a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

 Practicing Certificate by the High Court.

 A minimum of 4 years of progressive work experience in Legal Practice in an insurance sector.(an added advantage)

 Experience in handling litigations or court cases

 Report writing skills

 Communication skills

 Ability to draft legal documents

 Litigation skills

 Negotiation skills

 Should possess Computer literacy, mostly MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

 Good command of written English

 Analytical skills

 Interpersonal skills
