General Summary
In cooperation with different international collaborators, IDI is conducting a number of observational studies on patients with chronic Hepatitis B and Schistosomiasis infection over a duration of 5 years. In order to successfully, implement the project, IDI is looking for competent and experienced individuals to fill the position of Study Medical Officer. The study doctors are responsible for correct patient recruitment and follow-up. Furthermore, it is the study doctors’ responsibility to ensure, that Case Report Forms are filled correctly, study participants results are reviewed in a timely matter and discussed with the treating clinician and Principal Investigators.
Key Responsibilities
- Will work with the study coordinator to ensure that the study protocol is implemented with accuracy in all study sites. That is study follow ups and study procedures are implemented as per the protocol.
- Will be responsible for training lower level health facility staff to ensure that study procedures are implemented at clinic level.
- Supervise nursing staff and ensure that they achieve the objectives of the study as indicated in the protocol following all standard operating procedures.
- Work with the lower level facilities affiliated to the regional referrals and district hospitals to refer patients to the satellite sites for study enrollment.
- Travel to the two regional referrals and district hospitals on a regular basis with requirement to work at these stations for extended periods to ensure study procedures are implemented accurately.
- Conduct patient management procedures including performing lumbar punctures, and other required study procedures.
- Review and follow up all patients who will be admitted at the satellite sites and at Mulago/kiruddu hospitals to ensure they are getting the required care.
- Oversee the transportation of both patients and study samples between the IDI and the satellite study sites.
- Ensure very sick patients properly management and get referred to the relevant inpatient hospitals and are receiving all the care they need.
- Will be responsible for identifying and reporting all severe adverse events to the study coordinator in a timely manner.
- Manage patients with AE/SAE and will be required to review the inpatient at least once to get patient updates.
- Will be responsible for notifying the study coordinator regarding any study supplies that need ordering.

Person Specification
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
- Experience working in medical research.
- At least two years post internship training in a clinical setting.
- Experience working in medical research.
- Competence in the use of standard office software.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Strong clinical skills in managing Advanced HIV disease.
- Strong communication skills, with excellent writing skills.
