Plan International works in 70 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas promoting child rights and lifting millions of children out of poverty. Plan’s Global Strategic Goals (2017-2022) is to advance Children’s Rights and Equality for Girls ad our Ambition is, “together, we take action so that 100 million girls learn, lead, decide and thrive”. Our aim is to reach as many children as possible, particularly those who are excluded or marginalized through high-quality programs that deliver long-lasting benefits to children and their communities by working in partnership with others and operating effectively.

Plan International started working in Uganda in 1992 to respond to the needs of children affected by war in Luwero district. Since then Plan International Uganda have worked alongside communities on many different issues to improve millions of children’s lives. Our work is aligned with the Global Goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and Uganda’s second National Development Plan. Gender equality and the empowerment of girls and women are at the centre of our work.

Our programs and influencing work focus on the following areas:

· Supporting young people to learn skills and get good jobs

· Giving young children the best possible start in life through early childhood care and primary education

· Keeping children safe from all forms of abuse

· Improving maternal, neonatal and child health as well as the sexual and reproductive health of young people

· Responding to disasters and the influx of refugees into the country.

Refugees in Uganda face protection risks including child neglect, corporal punishment, exploitation, and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Almost equal proportions of host community households and refugee households are categorised as in need of protection services. Teenage pregnancy, early marriage, SGBV, defilement, child neglect, corporal punishment, mistreatment and neglect of fostered children are often reported among all population groups. With a weak community child protection system, children are struggling to cope and to adapt to the new circumstances in the country of asylum.

Plan International’s CP/SGBV in emergencies programming targets children under the age of 18, in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and our global mission to advance children’s rights and equality for girls. Recognizing Plan International’s protection-related technical and practical expertise lies in working with children and adolescents and providing specialized services to survivors of SGBV in emergencies, Plan International’s SGBV programming is targeted and designed for children and adolescent survivors of SGBV. By focusing on child and adolescent survivors of SGBV, Plan International also aims to increase the quality and effectiveness of programs to address this population group, in particular as it relates to the specific needs of adolescent girls.

The ToT on Caring for child survivors aims specifically to reinforce the case management capacity of Child Protection staff in getting foundational technical knowledge for caring for child and adolescent survivors.
