About This Position

Green Empowerment is seeking a Uganda Program Coordinator to seek opportunities to establish Green Empowerment’s programs in Uganda, support project development, management and implementation, and represent Green Empowerment with in-country partners and stakeholders. The Uganda Program Coordinator will spend considerable time with partners to strategize and jointly pursue existing and new ventures that meet all organizations’ shared goals.  We are seeking someone with at least five years’ experience in rural project development, who has technical aptitude, and a proactive attitude. This role will work closely with the Green Empowerment’s global staff to establish and grow programs supporting new project development, proposals, and track on pilot projects.

This person will work with local organizations and rural communities, improving the quality of projects and supporting program growth. The position is based in Kampala and will be expected to travel once permitted following COVID-19 guidelines supporting project coordination and collaborating with partners and community leaders. In the future, this role will spend a considerable amount of time traveling; we estimate ~25% time (5-8 days a month) supporting project development and implementation.

This is an initial six-month contract period with the possibility for continuation. Green Empowerment anticipates that meeting the position’s responsibilities will require 40-48 hours per week including travel days, with the occasional need to work on weekends or holidays. In addition to contract compensation, Green Empowerment will reimburse travel expenses for work-related travel.

Green Empowerment is a US-based non-profit that works with partners to provide access to renewable energy and clean water in rural communities in across the globe. Green Empowerment supports integrated projects that improve human well-being, are sustainable over time, limit the impacts of climate change, and have the potential for broad impact beyond any one community. Founded in 1997, we work with a network of partners in Nicaragua, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, the Philippines, Malaysian Borneo, and Myanmar. In 2020, we expanded our programs in Indonesia and Uganda.

Key program areas include:

  1. Water projects that improve health by delivering clean water for drinking, cooking, washing, and irrigation; increase access to improved sanitation; and strengthen community management of water resources
  2. Renewable energy (solar, hydroelectricity, biomass- improved cookstoves and biogas) systems that power households, health clinics, schools, community centers, small businesses, and income-generating activities
  3. Impact expansion through network building, training, consulting
  4. Environmental programs that prioritize community management of forests and watersheds, and utilize sustainable agriculture to generate income and improve nutrition while also preserving the environment.

Responsibilities

    • Represent Green Empowerment at local and regional events.
  • Lead the identification and development of new organizational partnerships to strategize and jointly pursue existing and new ventures that meet all organizations’ shared goals.
    • Manage project design and implementation in conjunction with partner organizations: overseeing supervision of program development activities at the technical, social, and organizational level. Develop and evaluate program monitoring and evaluation.
    • Support Green Empowerment and partners in increasing developing technical and pedagogical capacity through current project implementation and planning of future projects in coordination with Green Empowerment.
    • Collaborate with partners and the Green Empowerment team on proposal development, providing necessary inputs from the field, budget details, and contextual information to support strong proposals.
  • Identify innovative program and funding models that can sustain and increase the scope of Green Empowerment and its partner’s work in Uganda.
  • Assist in preparation of case studies, project reports and proposals, and other communication materials.
  • Other duties as assigned by Green Empowerment’s Program Director

Minimum Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least five years’ experience with project management, ideally involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience in community organizing and/or development, participatory environmental conservation, project management and/or international development.
  • Possess an awareness of and interest in supporting Uganda’s civil society community.
  • Able to facilitate dialogue between multi-level and multi-disciplinary stakeholders (e.g. private sector, government, and civil society)
  • Proactive ability to diagnose and solve problems and ability to work well with minimum supervision.
  • The ideal candidate enjoys taking on new challenges and is willing to learn topics outside of their area of expertise.
  • The ideal candidate is familiar with off-grid renewable energy, sanitation, drinking water, construction, and/or sustainable agriculture.
  • Willing and able to travel to remote and rural areas.
  • Willing and able to travel outside of Uganda, as needed.
  • Software: Proficiency in Microsoft office suite is required and experience with Google platform is strongly preferred.

Position Details: 

Full Time (40 hours per week), 6-month contract with preference to extend, compensation USD $1,500/month. This position will be hired through an international contract. Successful performance can create the opportunity for growth and longevity within the organization.
